On Sunday, at one P. M. the ship John, capt. Patterson, which arrived yesterday, took her pilot on board, at which time the Leander of 50 guns, and Cambrian of 44, were lying-to, with their heads to the eastward, in company with a Spanish brig from Laguira for New-York, which they have since sent to Halifax. At a quarter past two o'clock they fired a gun at the John, on which captain Patterson hoisted his colours, but would not heave to. The Cambrian then fired a few guns, which passed over the John without doing damage. The Leander then commenced a heavy fire of common, double-headed, and grape-shot, some of which were found on board the John. The Leander fired a hundred and six guns : her shot was in general directed high, one of which carried away the John's main-top-gallant-mast. She chased her within half a mile of the land, (in 4 fathoms water) having collected the marines on deck, who, when she put about, fired a volley into the John, which however did no damage.
