Full Text

Burlington, May 27.—While for several weeks there has been labor strife in Burlington relative to the complete unionization of labor and a campaign has been carried on energetically by the unionized forces, the first open break came this week when the Burlington Willow Ware Shops closed their doors for an indefinite period. Fifty employees are affected but twenty girls are to be paid full time while the plant remains closed.

One man who has but recently signed up with the union forces was discharged by this firm on Monday and nineteen fellow workers walked out when no satisfactory reason was given for the enforced layoff of the employee. The man laid off is a returned soldier.

The employers claim that the layoff was due to economic causes, such as uncertainty of the basket market, and that the force was being reduced. Labor men assert that it was a move against the man for his labor union activities. The men of the willow ware shops have applied for a charter.
