A RHAPSODY
From a true Briton, and who wishes well to his Country.
Never was the hand of the Almighty Disposer of events more conspicuous, or more marvellously seen, than within these few years upon the stage of the world?.... When the mighty Belligerent Powers had entered into a league....to crush, destroy, and to annihilate, the worthy KING of Prussia ..to sap and overturn ..the foundation of the best system of religion in the globe we live...to raise the power or the Pope's declining state..and that of the Princes depending upon him, his power and authority...in order to reduce the inhabitants of this earthly globe...to be slaves.. passive subjects to that abominable doctrine of the Romish Church.
Let us look back...weigh... digest and consider... the notorious, abominable, and unnatural leagues and steps they have taken to bring this horrid scheme to a period by first beginning with the brave King of Prussia...who, in all human probability, will render this satanic system abortive.
The Almighty Controller of Battles...who in the Scripture hath often mentioned, That the battle is not to the strong, nor the race to the swift..hath effectually given us occasion to admire his wonderful interposition...in supporting and preserving this Monarch...in many most dangerous and hazardous circumstances.
Give me leave to say his CHARACTER......He is his own Captain general at the head of his troops...few. indeed. in comparison with the numbers of the mighty Belligerent Powers....He is first Minister, and Secretary of State; Chancellor of his Exchequer. and first Lord of his Treasury ; Secretary of War, and Paymaster general to his troops ; Purveyor general, and Father to his People... Who, at the head of his few troops, hath baffled. disconcerted, and beat six times his number. tho' commanded by the choicest and best Generals, and best disciplined troops in Europe.
Where shall we find,in ages past, or the time present, his equal in judgment, his amazing watching, and indefatigable pains to accomplish this great end.
The prudent aid and assistance...that he has received from a wise Minister to a neighbouring Prince..ever watchful of his country's welfare...has enabled him to do these great things thro' the approbation of his Prince, and the aid of the Almighty giver of battles, who has acted hand in hand with him....in order to bring the mighty and haughty usurping Princes to reason.. and to procure an honourable, a safe and lasting peace...To save this worthy Monarch...and to prevent the farther effusion of christian blood, with which at this day the rivers in Germany are overflowed.
My pen, I own, is too feeble to attempt the character of this worthy Minister. though what I conceive of him...having kept time with him in the steps he has taken during his administration, you shall have it.
His CHARACTER........His amazing knowledge of men and things..his indefatigable watchings. had endeared him.. to the favour and esteem of his Prince (of blessed memory)...that he acquiesced with his general plan of operations. : . The wonderful success attending them gave him full scope to act. .and having gone so hand in hand with the great officers of the Crown...that he with them and their consent...has acted in every station like that of the brave King of Prussia.
No Farce is acted at his house...No levies, or drawing rooms..No feasting at his table; his dispatches are regular...loses no time, and ever upon the watch...and richly deserves he title of the Primum Mobile..or.Great Mover of the Grand Machine... The affairs in conducting the war...and the great success attending them...have proceeded from his well concerted plan of operations, which lay always before him...which he has conducted with fortitude and a noble resolution.
How happy, therefore, should we Britains think ourselves under such an Administration, and not hesitate a moment in granting him the necessary Supplies to carry on the War, till the haughty Belligerent Powers shall be brought to reason..For as he has so well disposed of the former Subsidies that have brought laurels to Britains from all parts of the Globe, we can have no reason to doubt but that he will continue the same assiduity:..and procure an honourable peace.
He is now labouring for one...and has had to do with the most subtle and most cunning Negotiator for his Prince in Europe...this Negotiator has resided here for some months..but our worthy Minister has proved himself to be equal, if not superior to him...that during so long a residence, he has not been able to obtain one point, no not one... The French froth...the French artifice, the French chicanery (for which that nation hath always been so remarkable) hath availed him nothing.
What therefore is due to so great a Minister, ever watchful for his Prince's happiness. and the subject's weal... and hath hitherto shewn...that he esteems his Prince's glory, and the subject's welfare to be coequal.
Long may he live...enjoy that great blessing, Health, and to see his worthy young Prince happily established on his throne..his subjects happy..and for ages to come, without molestation or interruption, enjoy the fruits of their labour, and to eat their own grape under their own vine...and to see the brave King of Prussia happily reinstated in his kingdom... Let the whole world join in chorus with me, and say, Amen and Amen.
