Columbia, S. C., November 3.—The testimony in the Cardoza trial closed to-day. On being cross-examined the defendant testified that Hardy Solomon offered him a bribe of $5,000, when visiting his private office, to pay certain fraudulent claims amounting to $20,000. Simon contradicted this, and alleged that he had given Cardoza $3,000 or $4,000 as part of the fraudulent claims substituted in this transaction. Solomon's cashier, Zay, testified that when he presented the claims Cardoza's clerk demurred to their payment, when Cardoza told him to pay it, it was none of his business. The counsel for the defense subsequently admitted the substitution of fraudulent claims. The arguments of counsel begin Monday. The jury is kept together and guarded every night.
