PORTLAND, ME., August 23.—At the morning session of the American Association for the advancement of science. S. H. McAllister, of Akron, Ohio, and nine others were elected members. Ten new papers were received and referred. Section B was divided into two sub-sections—Biology and Geology. A committee was appointed to memorialize Congress in regard to the preservation of forests. The Association afterwards broke up into sections. The discussion on Prof. Fowler's anti-evolution paper was continued in section A by Dr. Dawson and Prof. Morse. The session was brief and no new points were brought out. Dr. Dawson gave a description of a specimen of sigillaria showing the marks of fruitification. Prof. Wheelden read a paper on the Arctic regions—their geography, climate, ocean currents and other phenomena, considered with reference to the atmospheric theory of an ameliorated climate and open polar sea. He did not consider that the phenomena sustained the theory. The Association adjourned soon after, to allow the members to go on an excursion to Town harbor, in the revenue cutter McCulloch. The attendance is continually increasing, and large numbers of papers will be submitted.
