Valedictory Composed by the Graduates. Read by Miss Burns.
Address to the Graduates, Composed by Miss Craft. Recited by Miss McRedmond.
The young ladies acquitted themselves so admirably in their respective parts that to give to each her due meed of praise, would require more space than the press of important news on our columns will allow, yet we cannot refrain from mentioning a few of them: Miss Barrett read the opening address in charming style, and in the Cantata, the excellent singing of the Misses Burthe, Miss A. Dejan, Miss Florence Schmidt, and the little children who joined in the choruses, was remarked by all present.
The composition of Miss Eveline A. Waldo was clearly and correctly read and evinced a fine conception of the subject. The Rose of Savoy gave an opportunity for the young ladies to display their musical training, and the singing of Misses Reggio and Craft was especially worthy of praise.
The valedictory was one of the most appropriate and feeling addresses we have ever listened to, and the effective manner of its reading by Miss Lizzie Burns lent additional charms to its well chosen language. The address to the graduates, recited by Miss McRedmond, made a pleasing closing to the exercises by the pupils.
The distribution of premiums and granting of diplomas was witnessed with intense interest, and the trophies were carried off with just pride by the deserving pupils.
Rev. Father Finn, in delivering the awards, a diploma and gold medal, to the graduating class, remarked that they had all done so well that it was impossible to class them otherwise than by saying that they were all entitled to the same honors.
The names of the graduates were: Misses Lizzie Burns, Uranie Voisin, Bibbie Connor Helen Connor, Louise Reggio, and Mary Barrett.
After the exercises were closed, the visitors repaired to the fine art hall, where were displayed the work of the young ladies in painting, drawing, wax-work, needle-work, etc. We regret that we cannot give the full description of these productions which their excellence deserves. There were:
Herbariums by Senior Class: illuminated mottoes by Misses U. Voisin, L. Burns, J. Larkins. E. Dejan and M. Burke; pillow shams in lace work and braiding by Misses L. Reggio, E. Dejan. C. Craft, E. Riley, M. Howard. and M. Guerrero; a stole by Miss H. Connor; wax flowers by Misses B. Connor, L. Burns and H. Connor: wax crosses by Misses Florence Schmidt and K. Gilmore: wax motto by Miss M. Kelly: tapestry work by Misses M. Barrett and E. Lagarde; embroidery by Misses B. Connor. E. Waldo. Delia Karstendiek and M. Howard; paintings, drawings and other fancy work.
We cannot too highly compliment the ladies of St. Dominic on the proficiency shown by the pupils of their school in all the useful as well as ornamental branches of education. Their excellent system, combined with their kind and judicious management, has secured for St. Mary's Convent an honored place among the educational institutions of the South.
