OF FRENCH AFFAIRS.
The public accuser of the revolutionary tribunal has signified to his fellow-citizens, his intention of printing his excellent address to the Jury, and applying the profits arising from the sale, to alleviate the distress of the numerous orphans at Nantes, whose parents have been so cruelly put to death by the arbitrary orders of the monster Carrier. This is the reason that only a few extracts from the address, have as yet appeared in the French papers. We remark the following beautiful passage, in his discourse:
"TRUTH! thou daughter of the skies! descend into this sanctuary! serve with me the cause of Liberty, thy companion: too long has imposture spoken in thy name. Lend me that tongue of fire, which is thy emblem, and make my words as pure, as holy as thyself."
From various articles in the Paris papers, and the debates in the Convention, it seems to be acknowledged in France, that Danton, Lacroix, and the other deputies executed with them, were unjustly put to death, and fell like thousands of others, the innocent victims of Robespierre's cruelty and jealousy. The expulsion of the Brissot party, from the Convention, is also spoken of as one of the unlawful wicked measures of the now detected Jacobin faction.—
What will certain men amongst us, say now; men who forgetting every principle of reason, justice, humanity, and true republicanism, have for two years past, so piously resigned themselves to every thing done in France, and so heartily cursed their fellow-citizens, who dared to think for themselves, and doubt the propriety of many scenes that have taken place in that country.
It is asserted in the Paris papers that there is scarcely a single family in France, which has not lost one or more of its members, by the shocking barbarities that have been exercised during the reign of the late Jacobin tyrants.
