BIDWELL RAPS CONG. LENROOT
DENOUNCES WISCONSIN ORATOR FOR ATTACKING BRYAN HERE LAST FRIDAY EVE—
Congressman Irvine L. Lenroot, of Wisconsin, speaker on the platform of the summer chautauqua in Mitchell last Friday evening, was the target for a letter from F. A. Bidwell, who heard Mr. Lenroot attack Bryan for his position in the present international crisis with Germany. Mr. Bidwell's letter follows:
"Mr. I. L. Lenroot, Dear Sir:—I heard your speech last night in the chautauqua tent. I can not understand how a man who pretends to stand for peace as you do should berate Mr. Bryan, who has done so much for the cause of peace. It would appear that you are on the side of the dogs of war, who are barking at Mr. Bryan, and don't know it.
“Why attempt to belittle the doctrine of mediation between nations, as you did last night? You stated last night that if an outlaw should enter the tent and begin shooting and killing people we should not mediate for a year or less time. Perhaps you thought your audience would not know enough to know that that would be a matter for the police of this little town.
“Then you compared it to the difference between our country and Germany, evidently thinking that your audience would not distinguish the difference between a matter for the police and matter for arbitration between nations. I considered it an insult to the intelligence of our people.
“Respectfully, F. A. Bidwell.”
