' I was taken the 21st past in Latitude 28. 45. by the Zephyre, a French Man of War of 30 Carriage Guns and 350 Men, after an Engagement of two Hours and a Half, in which forty of the Convicts on Board behaved well, and fought with great Courage; but being overpowered by Numbers, was obliged to surrender, after killing them five Men, and wounding 16. We have one dead of his Wounds, and another I fear will not recover. The Man of War took me, most of my Men, and some of the Convicts on board them, and sent the Ship, with about 35 of the Men Convicts, and all the Women, for any Port in France; but unfortunately for those left on Board my Ship, she was lost near Brest, and all perished, except 7 Frenchmen, who had the good Fortune to get on Shore.'
