Bordeaux, Jan. 17.
"Since my last, various and contradictory reports have circulated, relative to a system to be adopted for commercial intercourse between the United States and France and her allies. The subject, I have good reason to believe, had been entered upon at Paris; but from the late orders to sequester American vessels and cargoes, in the neighboring ports of Spain, it was naturally concluded that this government had resolved, rather to increase, than relax its measures of rigour.
"Letters from Paris, moreover, announce, that the American property sequestered in the Italian ports, has been ordered for sale.
"In this posture of affairs, the frigate John Adams had arrived with despatches and the hope of an amicable arrangement again revived.
"For my part, I fear that this government is as much adverse to neutrals as that of England: and that America will be obliged either to renew her general embargo, or be involved in a war with one or other of these powers.
"A considerable intercourse has been carried on within these few months past between the two great belligerents, by means of licences—Wines, brandies, vinegar, turpentine, flour, wheat, and grain of every description, have been exported from this country to England, who on her part, availing herself of the Austrian war, poured into the northern ports, immense supplies of West India and other produce, which has reduced the prices in this country.
"Should any thing new occur, relative to American affairs you shall be immediately advised.
