Ceremonies commemorative of the cancelling of the mortgage on the Broadway Methodist Episcopal Church were held in the church last night, the Pastor, Rev. W. P. C. Strickland, presiding.
The mortgage was borne into the church on a waiter, banked with flowers, by Joseph E. Roberts, of the Board of Trustees, accompanied by his fellow members. The match was applied by J. D. King, senior trustee, and during the burning the audience waved their handkerchiefs as a parting salute.
The ashes will be preserved in an urn. The Prayer of Gratitude was offered by Rev. C. H. Whitecar, D. D., and the Historical Records were read by Joseph Elverson. Congratulatory addresses were made by Revs. R. S. Harrison, William Walton, George Reed, Milton Relvea and William P. Davis, D. D. Rev. G. B. Wight delivered a brief history of the mortgage, and the benediction was pronounced by Rev. A. K. Street. A despatch of congratulation was received from Gen. Clinton B. Fisk.
