PHILADELPHIA, May 9.

By Capt. Willman, who arrived this Morning 34 Days from St. Kitts, we learn, that they were still under Apprehensions of the French having a Design upon that Island; a Flag of Truce, returned from Martinico, informing them, that there were certainly Eight Sail of Men of War at that Island; the Officers of which talked of visiting the Gentlemen at St. Kitts in a short Time. Many of the People had removed their Families and principal Effects to Brimstone Hill, a strong Fortification, and were continually under Arms, and upon their Guard. Capt. Willman was on board the Trembleur's Prize off the Coast; he left her on Sunday last; she is very foul, and poorly manned. The Report that two Privateers of St. Kitts had set their Officers on Shore, and were gone a Pirating, proves a Mistake. Their Officers were on Shore at St. Kitts, while the Vessels lay too off the Island, waiting for some Hands, but were drove to Leeward imperceptibly in the Night; they returned soon after, took their Officers on board, and went on a Cruise.

Event Details

Capt. Willman arrived in Philadelphia after 34 days from St. Kitts, where apprehensions persisted of French design on the island; a flag of truce from Martinico reported eight sail of men-of-war there, with officers discussing a visit to St. Kitts. Many removed families and effects to Brimstone Hill fortification and stayed under arms. Willman left Trembleur's Prize off the coast on Sunday last; she was foul and poorly manned. Two St. Kitts privateers' officers were ashore while vessels waited off-island for hands but drifted leeward overnight, then returned, took officers aboard, and cruised.
