East India News.

The last accounts from Calcutta, by the Britannia, confirm the representations which have been made of the distress that prevails in that place, amongst a multitude of disappointed adventurers, who are reduced to the utmost poverty, without hopes of relief. These unhappy men cast an anxious eye on every ship that returns to Europe, and pant to enjoy the blessings of Old England, which they would gladly purchase at the expence of labor in their own country, rather than continue in their present lamentable indolence and penury. This pitiable condition, it may be hoped, will check the ardor with which people in this country look toward the East, where fortunes are not accumulated with the rapidity of past times, and where, whenever any employment becomes vacant, innumerable candidates immediately appear, urged by misery, at once unfriended and hopeless. The conduct of Lord Cornwallis is so evidently governed by sound policy and disinterested virtue, that, though these principles of action counteract the hopes of those who are in the habits of Eastern accumulation, characters, indeed, that abound in that quarter, his Lordship is generally respected, and his government highly admired. To the wisdom and virtue of the present Administration, is the choice of this estimable character to be ascribed; and, as his Lordship has always been moderate in politics, the election is the more laudable, and the more obviously the effect of a noble impartiality, that calls forth real talents, without regard to little views of party and connection.

Accounts confirm distress in Calcutta among disappointed adventurers reduced to poverty without relief, eyeing ships back to Europe. Hopes this checks enthusiasm for East ventures where fortunes slow and competition fierce. Lord Cornwallis's policy and virtue respected despite countering accumulation habits; his appointment by wise administration praised for impartiality.
