What is this article about?

A letter to the Republican newspaper argues that many principled Democrats, including some in Kent County, Delaware, refuse to support Winfield Scott Hancock for president in 1880, viewing his party as sacrificing honor and principles to defeat Republicans, and some even advocate for James A. Garfield.

Consistent Democrats.
For the Republican,
The assertion is false that Hancock 'fills the bill' of the Democratic party. There are doubtless tens of thousands who, to support him, must prove false to their better judgment and convictions. As in Maine, they must 'swallow their words' and simply fight with any, and on any grounds in order to beat the rival party. But there are tens of thousands who, while they cannot vote the Republican ticket, will not vote for their presidential nominee. They are men of some degree of principle, and, though their refusal to vote may elect Gen. Garfield, they are therewith very content. A prominent Democrat who is related to the leading families of Kent Co. Del., aware, and who is a consistent member of the church, told the writer plainly that he could not support Gen. Hancock. He said, moreover, that there were so much intemperance and ignorance in his party beside that, but for the fact of being denominated a "turn-coat" he would publicly embrace the doctrines of the opposite party. Then he continued that his party in this campaign was evidently intent on beating the Republicans at the sacrifice of principle, honor and affiliations of all sorts, no matter whether it was the utter abandonment of party creed, as in Maine and Indiana, or otherwise, and he has since openly and persistently advocated Garfield, while yet claiming intent to support the balance of the ticket. And this gentleman is not alone hereabouts, there are several who were 'secesh' during the war who will not support Hancock. They say his past record has not suited them, and even his Louisiana back-down they interpret as a bid for some conspicuous civil favor. He seems willing to do anything under the sun to be President. These cases are but a few of the thousands throughout the land.
