TO THE PUBLIC

"I gratuitously offered Col. Wm. Cumming satisfaction due to a gentleman, when he in the eyes of the whole community was disgraced and unworthy of notice--I appointed a day and place, and informed him I would meet him on no other.--He actually refused to meet me, under false pretences to obtain delay, to which he was not entitled;--I am perfectly convinced that from enquiries which no gentleman would make, he ascertained my mode of shooting, and refused to meet me, until he could have further time to practice. I have seen Colonel Cumming on the field of combat, bracing his coward nerves with artificial stimulants.--I know him to be a coward, who has been driven by desperation to the course he has pursued; and am satisfied he will meet no man, unless he supposes he has a decided advantage in the combat."
