Verses on the Singing of Mrs. POWNAL.

If poignant pain assail the heart.
Or robs it of its common rest;
If cruel love subdues your heart,
'Tis she can renovate your breast.

If dark distress o'erclouds our views,
Or sudden loss disturbs the mind;
'Tis she the sadden'd heart bedews,
And proves that Fortune is too kind.

Each harden'd heart forsakes its steel,
To sympathise for others' pains:
And all our passions make a kneel,
While list'ning to her soothing strains.

"O blest captivity" of mine!
If thus the oft'ning Captor sways,
And always with such graces shine,
I'd be a slave thro' all my days.
