FROM THE RICHMOND COMPILER.
The assertion has been frequently made by persons pretending to possess information on the subject, that lots sold higher in Richmond, than in any of the towns of Britain. The following paragraph of a letter from a citizen of this place, now a resident in London, and a member of one of the most respectable commercial houses in Richmond, will throw some light on this matter.
"In the new town of Edinburgh, I have it from undoubted authority, lots have sold at the rate of one hundred and ten thousand pounds sterling per acre; and what are the advantages of that city compared with Richmond?"
It is well known, that Edinburgh is not considered a commercial town, and that the new town is not a place of business—the above mentioned prices will, according to our mode of measurement, be equal to two thousand dollars per foot front. No sale has been made in Richmond including useful buildings for more than one thousand dollars per foot.
It has also been frequently asserted, that the prices of lots in Richmond are generally higher than in New-York or Philadelphia, any person who will be at the trouble to obtain information, will find that such a state of things does not exist. and that, taking the prices of Philadelphia and Richmond generally, within the proper limits of both, the prices in the latter place are not one half of those obtained in the former, and that in many parts, at similar distances from the centre of business, the disproportion is still greater.

Assertion refuted that lots in Richmond sell higher than in British towns; letter from Richmond citizen in London states lots in new town of Edinburgh sold at 110,000 pounds sterling per acre, equivalent to 2,000 dollars per foot front, while Richmond sales with buildings not over 1,000 dollars per foot. Prices in Richmond generally not half those in Philadelphia at similar distances from business center.
