Portland,
MONDAY, APRIL 22, 1799.
This Number Completes one year, or fifty two numbers, since the first publication of THE GAZETTE. The extensive and flattering support which it has received confirms the hope that my exertions will be amply rewarded with that success which I was led to anticipate from the citizens of this District. Still adhering to the principles on which my paper has been founded and supported, I have no room to doubt of a continued increase of public patronage.
The general punctuality and attention of my subscribers in discharging their bills, will, I hope, prevent the disagreeable necessity of dunning. Remote subscribers will receive directions how to make their remittances.
Publication of the Laws.
I am happy to inform the Public, that I have received an appointment from the Secretary of State, to print the Laws of the United States, in the District of Maine, beginning with Laws of the last session of Congress.
In consequence of this appointment, I shall commence their publication next week, agreeable to the method directed by the Secretary—
On this gazette will appear under the title of
Jenks's Portland Gazette.
Every exertion will be used to render this paper respectable, useful, and authentic, by
The public's most obedient servant,
A. JENKS.
