JUNEAU, (P) - The House passed a bill codifying Alaska election laws Wednesday after adopting amendments making it easier to run for the Legislature and more expensive to run for Congress.
The bill would shift administration of elections from the courts to the office of the Secretary of State. The vote on passage was 34-4, with four members absent.
The measure now goes to the Senate.
One amendment adopted would reduce from 150 to 50 the number of signature petitions required of independent candidates for the State Legislature in order to get their names on the ballot.
Another, offered by Rep. Richard Greuel would increase from $40 to $120 the filing fee for candidates seeking election to the U. S. House of Representatives.
