Is this the Nation (says a Gentleman at Francford to his Friend in Holland. Speaking of the French; who half a Century ago, bid Defiance to all Europe, and single, and unassisted, baffled the greatest Confederacy that had been ever seen? Is this he who laid the Plan of universal Empire, and was nigh effecting it; whose then reigning King looked down with Contempt upon Sovereign Princes; whose Ambition knew no Bounds, and whose Thirst of Glory laid Dominions waste? How mutable are human Things? This all grasping Power must now receive Laws from a Neighbour whom he affected to despise; who, from a proper Exertion of her natural Strength, rises superior to all Difficulties; carries her Arms and her Conquests to the remotest Corners of the Earth; and bids fair to convince the World that Gallic Importance was all imaginary; and wanted nothing but that Spirit which now prevails in England to reduce her within proper Bounds.
