January 20.
The William, a country ship, has arrived from Bombay, which she left on the 23d Sept. It is said that the substance of the intelligence by her, is, that the insurgents at Seringapatam had surrendered unconditionally. There have been most egregious geographical mistakes in almost all the papers in their statements of the troubles in India. Seringapatam is at the distance of 500 miles from Madras, and is nearly on the opposite side of the Peninsula, on the coast of Malabar.
This place never has been and never could be in the possession of the insurgents, connected with the Madras establishment. The principal resort of the malcontents is in the neighborhood of Masulipatam, in the Coromandel side.
The following is an extract of a letter from Bombay, received by the William:
Bombay, Sept. 22d, 1809.
There has been an action between the 58th regiment of the King's forces & two battalions of the Native troops. The oath was tendered prior to the engagement, and at the instigation of the officers of the latter, was refused to be taken. Under these circumstances, the British force opened upon the refractory party, and it was hot until there was a great destruction in the ranks of the latter, that they submitted. Twelve of their officers, who had survived the conflict, were instantly condemned to be shot.
Notwithstanding this unfavorable intelligence, indicating a disposition in the native troops to bring matters to the utmost extremity, no unfavorable effect has been produced in the Market for India stock, which sold this morning at 186, at the close of the business.
