Full Text

We have seen it asserted, in our late London papers, that the yellow fever was making an alarming progress throughout the whole of the United States; and as evidence of the fact, it is also mentioned, that Boards of Health have, in consequence, been established in Philadelphia, Alexandria, Boston and New-York. We deem it our duty to correct this statement. The fever during the last year did not make its appearance in any other place than New-York, Alexandria and Philadelphia—and but partially in the latter. In all our other towns—numerous as they are—no contagious sickness appeared. In Boston not one case of yellow fever occurred; and the history of the town, does not perhaps, shew a year in which a higher degree of health was enjoyed. The European paragraphists are very apt to confound the towns in the United States as they would the wards of a city; and imagine because a fever exists in one place, its contagion must of course extend to the rest—They ought to recollect, that Boston is nearly 250 English miles from New York; Philadelphia nearly an 100 miles further; and Alexandria 150 miles still further south.—As to Boards of Health they have been established in almost every mercantile town in the United States for many years.
