87 PERCENT SANITARY
4 Per Cent of Insanitary Premises Found With Stagnant Water Containers
Sanitary inspectors engaged in the task of examining business and residential premises here today reported to Dr. J. W. Chambliss, city health officer, that 87 per cent of the premises examined to date were found sanitary. This report, while encouraging to the health authorities, is just 13 per cent lower than they have determined to make Americus this summer.
Of the 13 per cent insanitary premises inspected by Chief Inspector Arrington and his assistants, 4 per cent were in such condition because of the maintenance thereon of containers filled with stagnant water. This condition, while most dangerous in that ideal breeding places for mosquitoes are thus maintained, is one easily remedied, and it is required that this situation be met without delay. All containers must be emptied regularly or destroyed entirely, Dr. Chambliss stated this morning, and in cases where residents fail or refuse to do this, cases will be made against the occupants.
Occupants of all premises inspected are given slips showing the condition in which these are found, and a record is kept in the office of the city health officer, showing minutely the degree of co-operation every resident is giving the health authorities in their efforts to rid Americus and the community at large of disease this summer. Dr. Chambliss has these records for last year's work as well as for the current campaign, and a close study of the figures therein is to be made at an early date to determine the regularity with which future inspections are made.
In cases where a lack of co-operation has been manifest over a period of one or more inspections, the health authorities in all probability will make added inspections of such premises, thus inconveniencing these householders through frequent visits through their yards and about their premises, as well as thus indicating the lack of confidence placed in them by the authorities.
