Many More Apply For Relief in March Than in February
Clothing, Underwear, Shoes and Stockings Distributed
A meeting of the executive committee of the Upper Windham County Relief was held in the rooms in Union block, Monday afternoon. The treasurer's report showed a substantial balance in the treasury.
Miss Symonds, welfare worker reported for the month of March. There were 67 new cases during the month. These, added to the old cases, 176, brought the total up to 243. She had 206 visits in her office and made 37 home visits. In comparison with February the increase in the work being done is apparent. In the second month in the year there were only 32 new cases and 44 old cases, a total of 76 as compared to 243 in March.
Miss Symonds has distributed 30 dresses, 30 men's coats, 13 sweaters, 12 pairs of trousers, 12 women's coats, 49 pairs of shoes, 42 pairs of stockings and 52 suits of underwear. A total of $162 was spent for clothing and $7.60 was spent for having shoes repaired. A total of 17 cases were closed during the month. In addition to the above groceries were furnished in some cases.
Independently Financed
As all of this relief work is being financed by generous people in Putnam and surrounding towns it is apparent that the Upper Windham County Relief has become an important institution. Not only are the cases being handled by one who knows, through special training, how to conserve funds and material without sacrificing the needs of those receiving help, but the saving to the town of Putnam is a substantial one. The Relief has taken the responsibility of furnishing all clothing.
While the quarters in Union block are still well stocked with material it is apparent that it is necessary that contributions be continuous to meet the continuous outgo. Anyone having articles to donate, clothing, underwear, shoes, rubbers etc., are asked to call the Relief headquarters telephone 1120.
