MEN AND PARTY-MEN
WE North Carolina Democracy has given its seal of sanction and loud approval to the "record of the National Administration."
That was to be expected. The Administration deserves a hand for many of its accomplishments. This newspaper has never withheld praise for such achievements as could plainly analyze in reason and timeliness.
It would, however, not go as far as did the Democratic convention in Raleigh in accepting what that Administration has done or proposed to do. Nor, for that matter, would a vast proportion of delegates if they were alone with themselves and away from the contagion of truckling assent which naturally features political conclaves.
No doubt, many a vote that went for this blank endorsement of the Roosevelt administration at the moment.
Politics makes demands like these upon people. Expediency and opportunism are its bedrocks. There is no place in politics for paramounting dissent or independent judgment.
The party must give the public the front window appearance of unity, loyalty and friendly co-operation.
In a convention, the big noise is the PARTY, in the abstract, and not the individual personalities that constitute the delegates.
Staying in power is the main objective and if that calls for swallowing distasteful pills there is no option but to hold the nose and let them ride down.-Charlotte Observer.
