A German gentleman, named Charles Neff, left this city some months ago for Washoe, leaving behind him a wife and interesting family of two children. The gentleman built him a house and entered into business at Silver City, and sent weekly to his wife affectionate letters telling of his health and well doing in the newly discovered El Dorado—
Twelve days ago the letters ceased, and Mrs. Neff grew anxious as to the cause, and often mentioned her uneasiness to her friends.—
Two or three days ago, one of the children, a little girl, who is barely able to talk fluently, while engaged in some childish pastime, was observed suddenly to pause in her sport, and become, as it were, transfixed with dread. As her mother approached, she turned slowly toward her, and with pale cheek and dilated eyes, slowly said, in German: "Papa is killed—and his house burned down." The child immediately resumed her natural manner, but the mother remained plunged in despairing doubt, a state of mind which was materially increased by the perusal, next morning, of the telegraphic news announcing the terrible Indian outrages in the immediate vicinity of the place where her husband had located himself. What mysterious influence converted this playful child into the grave communicator of such ominous words?
