As Vacation Spot
ATLANTA,—For many years Georgians have been promoting their state to the rest of the world as an ideal vacation-land. And they've been doing a good job of it, too. But just recently this come-play-in-our-state theme got perhaps its biggest boost to date at the national level when Business Week, a McGraw-Hill publication with international circulation, turned the spotlight on Georgia's Golden Isles region.
In a full-length article, pegged to the 25th anniversary of the opening of the fabulous Sea Island resort, the magazine traced the history of the $4.5-million development from the time the late Howard E. Coffin, a retired automobile magnate, built it to the present. Overall, the picture-story consumed the equivalent of four pages with 13 illustrations (12 photographs and a map of the coastal region) and more than three columns of reading material.
"Today," the story said, "with some 16,000 vacationers a year—from queens and governors to executives and honeymooners—flocking to the isle off southern Georgia, it's a $2.5-million business. Visitors from 48 states and a host of foreign countries keep it filled close to capacity -an average 86 percent the year round, a figure that puts the spot a lap ahead of almost any other 12-month resort."
