Arrest Two Negroes
For
Transporting
Whiskey

Thursday night John Timoney, Janie Timoney and Ethel Mack, negroes, were arrested two miles from Pinewood on the road to Sumter and charged with transporting liquor.

The arrests followed a wreck between the car driven by Timoney and a wagon occupied by Mr. Henry Lowder of Pinewood.

The negro was blinded by the lights of an approaching car, he declared, and smashed into the front of Mr. Lowder's wagon, knocking one mule into a ditch and badly damaging the wagon.

Mr. Lowder hailed a passing automobile and went to Pinewood where he got deputy sheriff H. G. McKagen and Magistrate G. J. Aycock. They went with him to the scene of the wreck and found a gallon and a half of liquor near Timoney's car and several broken two-quart jars which had contained whiskey.

The negroes admitted they had the liquor in the car, according to Mr. McKagen and said they were carrying it to a cousin who lived near Sumter. They live near Remini in the Santee River swamp and the father of John Timoney has served several terms on the chain gang for violation of the prohibition law.

John Timoney is held in the county jail for the upper court.

The two women were released by Magistrate Aycock on condition that they be ready to appear at court when called. Janie Timoney received severe cuts on her hands from a broken fruit jar she was carrying from the car. None of the other occupants of the wagon and car was injured.
