Militia May Be Called to Protect Prisoner Sentenced to Hang for Assault on White Woman.
[By Morning Journal Special, Leased Wire]
Tampa, Fla., Feb. 15.—Governor Gilchrist has ordered the two companies of state militia here to hold themselves in readiness to respond to a hurry call to the county jail where Teiman Flowers, the negro who a few days ago attacked Mrs. Jane Eilerbee, is held. Sheriff Jackson learned of a plot to take the negro tonight. Flowers today was tried, convicted and sentenced to hang.
At a late hour tonight Sheriff Jackson issued a statement in which he said that he would not need the militia, even though an effort was made to get the negro. He does not believe that any such effort will be made.
Flowers is the negro who escaped from a convict camp and after assaulting Mrs. Eilerbee, was shot while attempting to escape. Within fifteen minutes after a jury was secured today he was convicted and the death penalty imposed.
