Address Southern
Catholics Meeting
COLUMBIA, S. C., Jan. 3.-Dr.
Charles Malik of Lebanon--the
"other" Malik in the United Na-
tions General Assembly-will be
the principal speaker at the con-
vention of the Catholic Committee
of the South in Columbia Jan. 22
to 24. A dramatic and eloquent
indictment of segregation and
world-wide racial oppression is
expected from the Minister from
Lebanon when he addresses the
inter-racial general session on
"Human Rights and World Order."
Dr. Malik, besides being Minis-
ter from Lebanon to the United
States, is chairman of the Lebanon
delegation to Lake Success.
Politically, philosophically and
in most other ways he is at the
opposite pole from the USSR's
Jacob Malik. said Very Rev. Mau-
rice V. Shean of Rock Hill. S. C..
convention chairman for CCS, in
announcing Dr. Malik's acceptance
of the invitation to speak at the
important general session Mon-
day, Jan. 22.
The statesman caught national
attention in the United States with
an address to a UN committee
last month in which he exposed
the basic moral errors of Com-
munism and pointed out the posi-
tive means of spiritual, moral and
social regeneration that the world
must use to combat Communism.
"We live in an age," he said,
"where people are keenly aware
that they are human beings with
certain inalienable rights. They
are becoming increasingly restive
until they enjoy these rights. Not
all the cleverness, repression and
darkness in the world can any
longer cause the downtrodden and
oppressed to feel that they are
eternally doomed to their inferior
lot."
Dr. Malik will speak at the
same session as Gov. Sid McMath
of Arkansas. The Rev. Vincent
J. O'Connell. S. M.. general chair-
man of CCS, will preside and will
give a talk on "The Welfare State
and the Church."
Following the addresses,
the
CCS awards for service to the
South will be given.
Candidates
for the awards are now being
