[Extract of a letter from a gentleman of great respectability in Charleston, S. C. to his friend in Washington City.]
"The election here, and throughout the state, has terminated in a manner which has exceeded our most sanguine expectations. Mr. Poinsett's majority exceeds 400. Our legislative (state) election is equally decisive. The best of the whole business is that the Crawfordites have been thoroughly and effectually prostrated notwithstanding their assuming the name of Jacksonians. The result of all the elections throughout the state, has finally settled the Presidential question in South-Carolina. No where have the Crawfordites ventured to come out, even in defence of their chief. No Caucus Ticket has any where been run; and in places where Mr. Crawford is known to have a few adherents, (as in Charleston,) they found it necessary to come out as the supporters of Jackson. Mr. Poinsett came out and avowed himself favorable to Jackson--and Calhoun; and Col. Warren, (who was supported by all the Crawfordites,) was publicly announced the supporter of Jackson. So also in the adjoining district, Georgetown, the only candidate, Thos. R. Mitchell, having it objected to him that he was a Crawfordite, made a publication, in which he states that report to be one of the falsehoods which had "been fabricated against him. The result of the whole is this--that Representatives to the Legislature, favourable to JACKSON and CALHOUN, have been elected in every part of the state, without opposition. Mr. Clay's name has never even been mentioned. The friends of Mr. Adams have discreetly acquiesced in the will of the people in favour of the hero of New-Orleans. Jackson and Calhoun have been every where carried, by acclamation, throughout the state."
