Rivals in Love Settle Their Differences by Killing Each Other.
Ft. Elmo Special, 27th.
A fearful tragedy was enacted last evening at Neashogus Mill, six miles northwest of here. Two young men, Jacob Rosebrooks and Lewis Phillips, rivals for the hand of a village beauty, met at 7 o'clock, on Sunday evening, and at once commenced quarreling. Angry words led to blows, when Phillips drew a revolver, Rosebrooks at the same time pulling his. Both commenced rapidly firing. Four shots were exchanged apparently without effect, when suddenly Rosebrooks clasped his hand on his breast, reeled a moment, and fell to the ground, shot through the heart. As he fell he pulled the trigger of his pistol, a self-cocking 32-caliber Colt, and the weapon was discharged with deadly effect, the bullet striking Phillips on the left side, just below the fifth rib, ranging upward, and he, too, fell to the ground mortally wounded.
The innocent cause of the tragedy is crazed with grief over the tragic affair. All the parties to the affray were highly respected in the community, and, while their rivalry was much commented upon, no one anticipated so bloody an ending to it. The trouble was that the young lady seemed to be unable to decide as to which she preferred, receiving the attentions of both young men with impartiality.
