Borrowed Pride
Orlando Record.
A few days ago we saw a wagon going through the streets of Orlando loaded with some of the very finest pineapple plants set in boxes, all of them in fruit. A grand sight it was. Upon inquiry we learned that they came from the pineapple grove of Mrs. J. M. Wilkinson, near Orlando, and were destined for the Sub-Tropical. We felt proud for two reasons: first, this was the result of the labor and energy of a woman, showing what one could do who had a will; second, that Orange County would have something at the Sub-Tropical to show her capability. But alas! how our pride has tumbled. Those plants went to the Sub-Tropical, having been sold to the Hernando County exhibit, and are now receiving praise from thousands who are attending the exhibition. They are labeled "The Pride of Hernando County," and have become, not our pride, but some other fellow's pride. The lady, from whose place these apples came, has now at least fifteen hundred more of the same sort, and if any other county would like to borrow a little more "pride," it can be accommodated and furnished a card to show what that county can do.
Well, upon a second thought, our pride is still great, when we know that a great county is compelled to come into old Orange to secure the products of a lady's energy and thrift.
"Tis well.
