Clayton School News

The following news notes have been received from Clayton School:

GRADE I
Perfect attendance Douglas Dixon, William Hill, Paul Plummer, Robert Spencer, Edward Turner, James Walton, Bruce Faulkner, Esther Loder, Shirley Ann Hurd and Ruth Ann Dailey.

Two pupils were transferred from Clayton, one to Baltimore, Md., the other to Dover. One child entered the first grade from Richardson Park. Billy Hill visited in Wilmington on Saturday.

GRADE II
Perfect attendance Frank Brown, Harold Chambers, David Comegys, Donald Dixon, Paul Loder, Donald Hopkins, Elaine Carey, Lois Cole, Jane Johnson, Janet Johnson, Barbara Hobson, Virginia Plummer, Rebecca Scotten, Roberta Shockley and Doris Voshell.

Special emphasis has been placed in the second grade on "Good Manners and Right Conduct." Extra talks and stories are being used to help illustrate. The reasons for us to have good manners are explained.

GRADE III
Perfect attendance John Clark, William Fleming, Jay Knight, James Orvis, Frank Ross, Ronald Stevens, Ralph Walton, Thomas Nickerson, Carl Simpson, Nancy Hopkins, Faith Houtman, Carolyn Price, Charlotte Pryor and Mary Ann Scotten.

One new pupil, Jean Ivory, from Middletown has entered the third grade. We are studying the Arabian Desert in Social Studies.

GRADE IV
Perfect attendance - William Johnson, Clifton Rogers, William Virdin, Harold Willey, David Houtman, Nancy Pinder, Virginia Johnson, Mary Hopkins, Janice Dixon, Tarun Comegys.

Margaret Golding left the fourth grade Friday to attend school in New Jersey. Pupils in fourth grade brought money for March of Dimes. Earl Hurd was in Harrisburg, Penna., for the farm show for one day.

GRADE V
Perfect attendance Anne Brown, Jean Dixon, Normalea Hobson, Elberta Simpson, Neal Sullivan, Conwell Simpler, Edwin Zippe, John Knight, Toby Johnson, Jack Dykes and Joseph Churchman.

Conwell Simpler went to Philadelphia Saturday, Jan. 18 to see the Ice Capades. We have a new pupil in our grade. Mary Jane Carey. She was transferred from Kenton School. Carolyn Connell left our school in January and is now attending school in Philadelphia.

GRADE VI
Perfect attendance Charles Duff, Shelby Rogers, Vinson Ross, Carl Scotton, William Thorpe, George Voshell, Phyllis Price, Ruth Tribbitt, Barbara Lowman, Theresa Houtman, Edith Donovan, Veronica Burke.

John Lane left to attend the Mary C. L. Williams School in Wilmington. Gordon Cockburn is attending our class after having spent some time in Venezuela, South America. Betty Carey has been transferred to Clayton from Kenton.

GRADE VII
Perfect attendance Robert Connell, George Darrell, Norman Guessford, Richard Horn, George Dittman, Elwood Dulin, Milton Mabrey, Mary E. Smith, Mary Esther Houtman.

The Seventh Grade is now working on a unit on balanced lunches. Topic: "What food elements, such as iron, calcium and vitamins are necessary for good health and vigorous growth and what foods will furnish these elements in large quantities." Also they have been following Admiral Byrd's Expedition to the Antarctic and comparing it to his previous expedition. They were very glad to see Mary Louise Tucker after three weeks of illness, back in school.

GRADE VIII
Perfect attendance - Evans Cole, Kenneth Hudson, Richard Rogers, Kenneth Thorpe, Kurt Zippe, Hynson Cole, Thomas Robinson, Betty Sue Jarman, Addie Marie Tribbitt, Ruth Kimmey, Betty Anne Kimmey, Nellie Daniels, June Cooke, Deborah Ballard, Janet Ayres.

The graduation class decided that the class color, flower and motto shall be as follows: Color, blue and gold; Motto, On To the Future; Flower, red rose.

The pupils of Clayton School during the March of Dimes campaign donated $20.75.

Very attractive platters are being served for lunch in the cafeteria.

As a result of the essay and poster contest sponsored by the Clayton Fire Company during Fire Prevention Week, the following awards were made by the Company: Posters, best in each grade: Grade 1, Albert Guessford; 2. Norwood Shahan; 3, Dawson Shahan; 4. Virginia Johnson: Essays, best in each grade; 5, Nancy Lee Davis; 6, Richard Comegys; 7, George Council; 8, Martha Hurd. Special mention for poster: Grade 6, Richard Comegys.
