The Philadelphia papers all failed by yesterday's mail; but we are indebted to the politeness of a gentleman from that city for a copy of the United States Gazette of Wednesday morning, from which we made the following extract:
" Yesterday was an important day in our city. Never were the hopes of our opponents more elated. Never were there exertions stronger, or their arts more evident. We give below the state of the polls. It will be seen that the National Republican and Independent Democrats have elected every man nominated on their ticket. The institutions of our city are safe. The cause of order has prevailed. We shall, at a future day, speak of some of the arts of our opponents, and especially of the signal failure of their coup de main."
" We give below the returns from the county as far as received. We have reason to believe that the Van Buren ticket has prevailed, and that Judge Sutherland is elected to Congress."
