Full Text

Hard Rap at Delaware Farmers.
The South Jerseyman, published at Salem, prints the following:
On Saturday night a colored man came trudging up Broadway, carrying an antiquated grip sack. He was looking for a colored boardinghouse. To the citizens of whom he made inquiries concerning a boardinghouse, the colored man said he was from "de Western sho' of Mar'land"; that he had walked through Delaware looking for work on a farm, but as he found so many farmhouses that were 'greasy on de sunny side,' he didn't stop, but came 'clar froo to Jersey.' The citizen asked what he meant by farmhouses with 'greasy sunny sides,' and the colored man from 'de western sho'' explained: "Why, boss; a heap of farmers in Del'ware feed dar help on dried herrin' which dey dry by hangin' on the sunny side of de house. I found so many of dese kin of farmhouses that I just went on." I should add that this philosopher has found a job with a Salem county farmer whose house is not "greasy on de sunny side."
