Lamartine, in his new work, entitled The Eastern Question, claims that while he was at the head of the French government, in 1848, he gave instructions, in the following words, to the Ambassador of the French republic at Constantinople:
Provoke no war between Turkey and Russia.
Dissuade Turkey from any act of aggression against the Russians—if it Russia should dare to profit by the universal agitation of Europe, and attack or menace the Ottoman Empire, tell the Sultan that France is the necessary ally of Turkey, and that he can dispose not only of the fleet of France, but of the armies, as though they were his own. In case war should be undertaken by Russia against the Porte, a certain alliance—because it will be natural—will be the triple alliance which must follow between France, England, and the Ottoman Empire.
