LONDON, April 21.
They write from Lisbon, that the licensed ship N. S. das Nevas e St. Anne, capt. Bento Maiel, was arrived there in 85 days from the Bahias, with fifty millions of rees in specie, besides other valuable effects.
A most cruel murder was a few days ago committed at Birmingham: two men being in possession of the household goods of one Darby, on a distress for rent, in the evening two of the said Darby's sons came in, armed with a broom stick and bludgeon, and fell upon them; when one of the men making his escape, the other fell a victim to their barbarity: they were soon after apprehended and committed to Shrewsbury goal: tis said their father stood by encouraging them during the perpetration of this horrid act.
Last Saturday morning the body of Mary Ann Eyles was found near Cut throat-lane, Bow, stripped naked, and murdered in a most shocking manner, her head being almost cut off, and her body terribly cut and mangled. It is supposed to have been committed by two men, who were seen by a man sowing peas, one of whom had a bundle under his arm, supposed to be the poor creature's cloaths; they told the man there was a woman lay bleeding to death just by, and while he went to see they made off.
Last Wednesday 7 night, soon after divine service the steeple of Great Billing church, near Northampton, was knocked down by a flash of lightning, and some of the stones whirled into the air with such astonishing force as to be carried to a considerable distance; one of a very large size ploughed up the ground in Mr. Backwell's garden like a cannon ball, bounded from the place where it first fell with great violence, and was carried several hundred yards farther. Many of the pews in the church are shivered to pieces, and the sulphureous smell was so powerful, that scarcely any body could bear to go near the church, which is so much shattered that it is thought the whole fabric must be entirely rebuilt.
