Messrs. Editors—

The following poetical effusion will probably please such of your readers as are acquainted with Ivanhoe:

THE ISRAELITE MAID.

Already the sail is unfurl'd to the breeze,
Which wafts me away over billowy seas.
Oh! far from the land of my childhood I roam,
An outcast I wander from country and home.
But Oh! when thou hearest the tempest, dismay'd,
Then, Lady, remember the Israelite maid!

Farewell to thee, Lady! Oh long may you prove,
The bliss of unceasing, reciprocal love!
Long, long may the smile that beams now for thee,
Bloom on his cheek, though it bloom not for me!
Yet—the tempests low list—Oh! for it be paid,
One tear to the fate of the Israelite maid!

But hark! 'tis the signal that calls me away,
To the boat; I am with thee—one moment's delay!
Oh: pray for me, Lady:—for thee I will sue,
To the God of the Christian, the God of the Jew!
Yet—adieu once again—too long I've delay'd—
Oh Lady, forget not the Israelite maid!
