Main speaker for the Michigan State Fair's 12th annual Sunrise Service at 8 a.m. Sunday, August 26, in the Music Shell on the Fairgrounds will be Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, president of Morehouse College, Atlanta, Ga.
the day of the service.
Dr. Mays, an ordained Baptist minister, is a former vice president of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America (now the National Council of Churches) and is immediate past president of the United Negro College Fund.
A native of Epworth, S.C., Dr. Mays was educated at Virginia Union University, Bates College and the University of Chicago. From the latter school, he received his Master's and Doctor's degrees.
Before becoming president of Morehouse in 1940, he was dean of the school of Religion at Howard University for six years.
Dr. Mays is the author of several books and numerous magazine articles. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and has received honorary degrees from 10 colleges and universities.
The State Fair Sunrise Service is co-sponsored by the Detroit Council of Churches and the State Fair. It will come a week earlier than usual this year, since the fair itself is a week earlier, running from 6 p.m. Friday, August 24, through Monday, September 3.
The Sunrise Service annually attracts 8,000 to 10,000 worshippers. Admission to the grounds will be free until 8 a.m.
