Getting Better.
WASHINGTON, Aug 19.-The President's condition today has been decidedly better than any day since the unfavorable symptoms of Monday last manifested themselves. He has slept more today than usual and appears much refreshed on awakening from slumbers. While the glandular inflammation has not entirely disappeared, it is thought that it is less irritated from the fact that the patient does not experience so much pain. Another unquestionable feature denoting improvement is the tone of the President's stomach, which has not shown any gastric disturbance. Members of the Cabinet and all others who called during the day have left the mansion obviously much encouraged. The air of solemnity which has prevailed at the White House for the past few days has given place to a decidedly better feeling. It is now generally conceded that inflammation of the parotid gland does not in this case indicate pyaemia, and is due entirely to the patient's debilitated condition. Not a word of a despondent character has been uttered today by those having access to the President's apartments. Said one of the attending surgeons this evening: 'The President has made a sensible improvement today.'
