APPRENTICES' LIBRARY

Mr. Daveis' Address. A numerous audience last evening testified to the increasing interest which is felt in the community for this useful and valuable institution, as well as the pleasure received by the excellent address delivered on the occasion. "Good instruction is better than riches;" and the more this is diffused, the more are happiness and virtuous principles promoted. The subject of Mr. Daveis' address was to inculcate the importance of cherishing institutions for the encouragement of useful knowledge and for spreading information in those classes of society to whose improvement, until within a short period, but little attention has been paid.

We have not time to do justice to the excellence of the performance or the importance of the subject.

The reputation of the Beethoven Society was well sustained by the skilful execution of some admirable music. The collection raised in the evening, which was exclusively for the benefit of the library, was creditable to the liberality of our citizens.

We regret that the unfavorable state of the weather deprived many of the pleasure afforded by the performances of the evening.
