Record Bond Set
For Kehrt After
Third Felony
ANCHORAGE, (P) — A record bond of $100,000 has been set here for Wesley E. Kehrt after his involvement on a criminal charge for the third time in rapid fire order.
The U.S. Commissioner's Court set the high figure on a charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Kehrt, a Texan, was one of two men convicted recently in Fairbanks on a charge of bringing a woman to Alaska for immoral purposes.
He quickly ran into trouble in Anchorage after getting his freedom on appeal bond at Fairbanks. He was charged last week with assault with intent to kill Jess Combs in a suburban night club.
He was at liberty on $25,000 bond in that case when the U.S. Attorney ordered his re-arrest on the basis of reports that he might be carrying a weapon.
Two officers shadowed Kehrt and his wife at a gangster movie and made the arrest shortly after they left, early Saturday. Deputy U.S. Marshal James Chenoweth and City Detective William Nettleton said Kehrt tried to pass a .45 automatic to his wife when he was seized.
Setting of the $100,000 bond, believed to be a record for the territory, followed.
