Everglades Sheriff
Now On Eighth Term

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—A little more than 29 years ago Frank B. Tippins decided his thriving livery stable business soon might become a liability, and he ran for sheriff of Lee county.

Last November he was elected for his eighth consecutive term as guardian of the peace in this section of the Florida Everglades.

Sheriff Tippins, now past 60, began his long official career when the southern part of Florida was a vast cattle range. For more than a decade he patrolled an area of nearly 4,000 square miles, territory equal in size to the combined states of Delaware and Rhode Island. The re-division of the county in later years whittled his domain to one-third of its original size.

In the early days of his rule the Everglades offered a perfect rendezvous for criminals. Scores of times the sheriff was called upon to go into the swamps for killers and armed bandits.
