The Copperhead Nominees.
The Copperhead nominees for President and Vice President are Gen. George B. McClellan, of New Jersey, and George H. Pendleton, of Ohio.
The former has heretofore professed to be in favor of a vigorous prosecution of the war until the rebels laid down their arms and submitted to the authority of the Federal Government, but if he accepts the nomination, which he will without doubt, on the platform adopted by the Convention, it must be taken for granted that he will faithfully carry out the will of the party, if elected, which will destroy the nation, and involve us in a hundred years' war. The right of secession cannot be approved or allowed in any way without disrupting the Union into fragments and involving bloody wars of long continuance. It is for the people to say whether they will prosecute this war, now near its end, or by terminating it at once, and acknowledging the independence of the Confederacy, enter into another, the end of which they nor their children will live to see.
Of the nominee for Vice President it is only necessary to say that he is Vallandigham's right bower, and is and has been from the start opposed to all coercive measures against the rebels. His programme now, is to persuade the rebels to come back into the Union by offering them favorable terms, and if they refuse to acknowledge their independence, believing, as he does, that the Constitution confers no authority upon the Federal Government to coerce a seceding State, or force it to remain in the Union against its will.
Can it be possible that a majority of the people of the Union will vote for men entertaining such views? If they do farewell to Union, liberty and prosperity forever.
