Machines.
In unmistakable terms the electors of Gadsden county expressed themselves on the subject of operation of slot machines at the polls last week when they voted about seven to one against continuation of their operation. Notice was thus served on the so-called "one-armed bandits" that they are not welcome here and notified to leave.
The unfortunate feature, however, is that it will be September 30 of next year before the county can rid itself of this nefarious form of banditry which never should have been legalized, but which flourished in many counties of the state in open defiance of the law long before the legislative act of 1935 was enacted.
In face of the opposition registered against the machines in the many counties in which referenda were held the duty of the next legislature is clear. The act should and doubtlessly will be repealed without serious opposition, but unless drastic provision is made for the punishment of persons guilty of illegal operation the result desired will fail of attainment. Hard upon repeal of the statute authorizing operation of "slots" should be enacted a law making it a felony to own, operate or have in one's possession coin devices of this character, if operation is not to be continued in many sections of the state, where law enforcement officials are none too conscientious in discharge of their duty and where offenders are released if apprehended upon payment of a small fine.
The only possible means of avoiding the possibility of continued operation is a statutory provision making violation an offense punishable by confinement in prison. Otherwise little will be gained by repeal of the act, which does bring into state, county and city treasuries considerable revenue.
