The City Board of Commissioners of Roanoke Rapids met in the first monthly meeting of the new year this Tuesday and transacted much routine business.
Present were Mayor Jenkins and Commissioners M. D. Collier, E. B. Manning, A. N. Martin, R. I. Starke, G. N. Taylor.
Commissioner F. C. Williams was absent.
Commissioner Manning reported nothing done about water draining over the sidewalk at Smith Sinclair Station corner as Mr. Smith has plans which may materialize by the 13th of this month to change that place of business. The matter was deferred until after that date.
Tag Penalty Set
Monday, Jan. 11th, was set as the date when a 25 per cent penalty goes on all late purchasers of city license tags for motor vehicles. After Feb. 1, summons will be served on all those driving without the tags, a fine of $5 to be imposed, with each day thereafter a separate offense.
Bicycle Lights
It was ordered that a copy of the State law regarding lights on bicycles be published and violators thus warned that strict enforcement will start at once. A copy of the State law appears in this issue.
It was voted to send Henry Fitts, building inspector, to Durham Jan. 19 and 20 to attend meetings of the N. C. Chapter of Electrical Inspectors.
Ratification of the agreement between the Mayor and the Seaboard Air Line for rental for one year at $100 of the old depot building on 3rd Street.
Firemen Want Pay
A letter from the Fire Department asking for an increase in pay for the full time men and payment for all part-time members on the basis of fires and drills attended was read. The Board answered the letter by advising the Fire Dept. members that it now had under consideration this matter of some payment to all members.
It was reported that a snow plow, ordered by the city, will arrive here about Jan. 15th.
Today work started on scraping, sanding and waxing the floors of the new Municipal Building.
