"There is no manner of danger from the Spaniards. There are between six and seven hundred regulars at Natchitoches—200 volunteers from this county, and I hope an equal number from the neighbouring counties, so that the Dons will surely be captured unless they retreat beyond the Sabine, on the approach of our troops. The French, with a few exceptions, turned out surprisingly, Chevalier Poirret, and Cyprian La Cour, are among the volunteer companies. We are well affected here, and unanimous. Volentine is making exertions among the Indians on the side of the United States, they are all perfectly friendly, and the Caddoes highly resented the cutting down the American flag, by the Spaniards in their towns. We feel ourselves as secure here as if at Lancaster."
