A DEVICE WHICH SECURES ALL PARTS OF THE BODY FROM HEAD TO FEET AND HOLDS THE VICTIM IN A RIGID POSITION
HERE IS THE SHERIFF'S DEFIANCE
Office of
SHERIFF PIERCE COUNTY, WASHINGTON,
Tacoma.
Robert Longmire, Sheriff.
Tacoma, Wash., Dec. 20, 1916.
Mr. Hardeen, Pantages Theater, Tacoma, Wash.
Dear Sir--Hearing that you claim to be able to escape from any kind of regulation restraint, we would like to test your ability with a device that we think would be far more difficult than anything you have previously attempted.
We propose to fasten you from head to feet into a crazy-crib. This contrivance secures all parts of the body in a rigid position and there will be no chance to reach any of the fastenings. If you will allow us to place you into this apparatus we would require you to release yourself if you can in full view of ourselves and the audience and without the aid of any screens or cabinets. This will be the only way we would permit you to try it.
If you feel equal to the task, please notify us at your earliest convenience and we will ship the crib over at any performance you suggest,
We remain yours truly,
ROBERT LONGMIRE, Sheriff, and Deputies.
