THE TEMPERANCE LEAGUE.

The second number of the Temperance League comes to us with a request to exchange. We cheerfully grant it. The League is published by the Executive Committee of the State Temperance League, and edited by the Rev. J. G. Wilson, of Milwaukee; and is in a measure, the continuation of the campaign paper, published under the same auspices, last Fall.

Mr. Wilson has the reputation of being one of the ablest clergymen of Milwaukee. But the number before us is staid, and sober, and commonplace; there is no point about it, nothing to mark it above the Local Press of the State in ability or adaptation to the Reform it advocates.

It starts with a circulation of eight hundred, at one dollar a year; and though the cause is worthy of better success, we fear it cannot live.

Ostensibly it is the same as the Campaign Paper, and a prejudice exists against it all over the State, growing out of the action of the League towards Madams Nichols and Fowler. But it is published by a new Committee and a new Editor: and should not suffer for the errors of the old.

In this connection we will mention that one of the Committee, the other day at Milwaukee, expressed himself severely against the editor of the Free Democrat: and said he had done the cause of Temperance much harm in his tour throughout the State last Fall—that he had done all he could against the League and those connected with it. His view is a mistaken one. Mr. Booth nowhere said a word against the League or its course, so far as we heard, and we heard him in several portions of the State.—p.
